Plastic pipes can be used across various industries, including water supply, wastewater management, oil and gas distribution, and industrial processing. Of importance is the mechanical properties, chemical resistance, compositional properties and physical properties of a pipe, as pipe selection is paramount in order for the product to withstand the operating and environmental conditions to which it is exposed.  

We have investigated numerous polypipe failures, including Polybutylene pipes, Polyethylene pipes, PEX pipes, Polypropylene pipes, PVC pipes, CPVC pipes, and ABS pipes. In accordance to the relevant ASTM and ISO standards, we have the capability of undertaking material characterisation (positive material identification and presence of contamination), stabiliser analysis (residual antioxidants/stabilisers), mechanical testing (stiffness,  reversion, degree of crosslinking, tensile strength, impact strength), physical property testing (MFR, density testing, dimensional testing), and microscopy for incipient cracking and fractography, among others as part of a failure investigation and assessment into pipe quality. Some examples of polypipes we have investigated include:

• Stress cracking of ABS chilled water pipes (due to solvent cements, lagging adhesives, phthalates from cushioning material)
• Oxidative cracking of PP-R hot water pipes
• Cracking of PVC pipes (due to inclusions)
• Cracking of PE-X hot water pipes
